BLACKPINK: THE SHOW [Online Concert Review]

BLACKPINK had their online concert THE SHOW via a Youtube Livestream on 01/31/2021 which I was very happy with as it made it extremely easy to stream the concert to my TV and enjoy from the concert from my own home.

I had personally never seen BLACKPINK perform live before and I really hope that one day in the future I'll be able to because this concert just proves how stellar BLACKPINK are as performers. It was a mix of both live and pre-recorded stages, and I definitely preferred the live stages even though the pre-recorded stages sounded more polished, there's just something special about hearing a performer sing live and really feeling the effort that they put into the performance.

If you didn't get a chance to watch it, the performance of Pretty Savage that was aired on The Late Late Show with James Corden was actually the exact same version of the performance that streamed in the concert. Definitely give it a look below if you haven't seen it yet!

The majority of the concert pretty much falls in the same structure as the performance above, they performed various title tracks which each had some sort of choreography change or remix of the song. Some of the title tracks they performed were, How You Like That, Kill This Love, DDU-DU DDU-DU, Whistle, Boombayah, Playing With Fire, As If It's Your Last and Forever Young (not necessarily performed in this order).

My particular favorite of the title tracks were was definitely DDU-DU DDU-DU as they really went to great lengths with intense additional choreography and backdrop where the girls were performing with fire in the background and dancing in the water! It was definitely an insane performance and I was so glad I got to watch it.

The album tracks that they performed in THE SHOW included, Crazy Over You, Love You to Hate Me, Sour Candy, and Don't Know What to Do. While I did enjoy all of the album tracks they performed I definitely would've loved to see more album songs performed such as a live version of Ice Cream  or Bet You Wanna. The performances that stood out to me here were definitely Crazy Over You as it had some amazing choreography that we had never seen before and Don't Know What to Do, which was toned down in that it had no choreography and really highlighted the girl's vocals, I personally thought that Rose and Lisa shined the most in this song with Rose's smooth vocals and Lisa's mesmerizing rap.

The personal highlight of THE SHOW was the solo performances for each member. The first solo performance was a vocal performance by Jisoo who performed her rendition of Habits (Stay High) which she wrote her own Korean lyrics for. This song really highlighted Jisoo's deep vocal while at the same time showcasing her ability to hit notes in a higher register.

The next performance was Lisa who performed a cover of the song Say So. This song has a lot of groove which Lisa did great really emphasizing, she also added in her own rap which really added a nice punch to take the performance to the next level. And of course it wouldn't be a Lisa performance without a stellar dance break, which she killed with smooth lines and intense floor work.

Following performance was Jennie performing her own song Solo, but of course with a twist! There was newly added choreography and an additional rap break which definitely showed how versatile Jennie is as a performer, she doesn't lack in singing, dancing or rapping! I found that Jennie was definitely the most stable member throughout the entire concert.

And the final solo performance of the night was an early preview of Rose's solo! It started off with showcasing her music video then transitioned to her live performance of her solo track Gone. It was really an emotional song and you can definitely tell that Rose put a lot of hard work into producing and composing this song. You can really tell how she feels connected with this song when it transitioned from her music video to her live performance, there was just so much more emotion in her live singing which and I definitely can't wait to see more of her solo stages in the future.

Overall it was a stellar concert and I really enjoyed how BLACKPINK and their staff worked to make each performance special so it didn't seem like you were watching a music show. They ended their concert with a really cute performance of Forever Young where the set was the fans letters to the girls. We got to see the girls interact with the set and had a more free performance without any defined choreography. Really hoping in the future that we will get to see BLACKPINK in person soon, but for now I'm really happy they gave us such great and awesome performances which fans were able to enjoy from the comfort of their own home.
